Biodiversity in the Sea

Support the restoration of marine ecosystems, from kelp forests to coral reefs, creating thriving underwater habitats and measurable biodiversity outcomes.

How it works

Marine Habitat Restoration

We restore kelp forests and coastal ecosystems through targeted marine restoration, deploying artificial reefs and reintroducing key species to rebuild biodiversity and enhance carbon storage.

Species Recovery

Our projects create the conditions for fish populations and marine wildlife to recover, strengthening entire ocean food webs.

Scientific Monitoring

Biodiversity outcomes are monitored through rigorous scientific methods, in collaboration with NIVA, including eDNA sampling, remote sensing, and field surveys.

Kelp forest restoration

Trefadder’s marine ecosystem work includes large-scale kelp forest restoration in Northern Norway. Kelp forests, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea,” play a vital role in marine biodiversity, coastal resilience, and carbon sequestration.

Along large parts of the Norwegian coastline, kelp forests have disappeared, leaving behind lifeless sea urchin barrens. We restore these areas by removing sea urchins and enabling natural kelp regrowth in carefully selected locations such as Rystraumen in Tromsø. This science-backed approach brings life back to the ocean, strengthens biodiversity, and captures CO₂ through fast-growing kelp - delivering measurable, nature-based climate impact.

Sea habitats

Sea Habitats is Trefadder’s newest marine biodiversity initiative, launched in November 2025. The product focuses on the deployment of artificial reefs designed to create habitats for marine species and support the regeneration of local ecosystems.

These projects are developed in collaboration with marine experts and local stakeholders and are designed to be monitored over time to assess biodiversity impact and ecosystem development.
