Archer continues collaboration with Trefadder to offset residual emissions

Norwegian oil and gas production is already among the cleanest in the world in terms of CO2 emissions. Now, energy service company Archer is raising its environmental ambitions and continuing its collaboration with Trefadder to offset residual emissions.

– As a company, we are committed to contributing to the ongoing energy transition. At the same time, we are part of a larger value chain and believe it is important that all businesses have measures to solve climate challenges. That is the reason why we put sustainability on the agenda many years ago. A concrete measure is solar cell roofs at our offices in Norway, England and Argentina. We are continuously working to find new measures and are now continuing our collaboration with Trefadder to compensate for residual emissions, says Line E. Askeland, Senior Communication Advisor at Archer.

Archer is a global energy services company with a history spanning over 50 years. Today, the company operates in 40 locations and offers drilling services, well integrity and intervention, plugging and phasing-out, as well as decommissioning services to its upstream oil and gas customers.

Trefadder was established in 2019 to help businesses with emission reduction, setting up climate accounts and climate compensation from their own biological carbon capture. In a short time, Trefadder has become Norway’s largest player in biological carbon capture with climate forests.

Several projects for the green shift

The company primarily works to offer products and services for the oil and gas industry, but is actively looking for opportunities to assist with the development of renewable energy sources.

• In 2022, we acquired 50 percent of Iceland Drilling, which provides drilling and well services for the production of geothermal energy and carbon storage. For now, the companies are operated separately, but we are continuously working on synergies across the business.
• We are convinced that geothermal energy is part of the energy mix of the future and have this as an important part of our strategy to turn the industry towards renewable energy sources, she says.

Taking social responsibility

She says that the sustainability goals are anchored in the board and that the leaders in the individual divisions are obliged to follow up.

– We take ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) as our starting point. To ensure that this is something that is actually implemented, the managers in the various divisions are followed up and measured on their implementation. In addition, the management continuously takes a position on which measures will be most sustainable in the long term.

The company is committed to finding sustainable solutions both at the operational level and in production.

– Among other things, we are looking at how we can replace diesel-powered vehicles with electric ones. In some places this is possible, while in other places we are dependent on fossil fuels and diesel generators. This is to be considered residual emissions that we want to compensate for in the form of climate forests from Trefadder, she says.

Concerned about documented effects

She says that they chose to collaborate with Trefadder primarily because the company can document the effects of the measure.

– We chose to collaborate with Trefadder because of their expertise and because they can document that they plant on registered land, and that the trees remain standing for a long time to capture as much CO2 as possible. This is a concrete and tangible measure with a documented effect on the environment. The collaboration with Trefadder will, together with other measures, contribute to the company becoming climate neutral in Scope 1 and 2 globally, excluding Argentina.

Scope 1 is direct emissions from operating assets that the company has operational control over. Scope 2 is indirect emissions from purchased energy.

– Our goal is to be climate neutral by 2050 through continuous development of new sustainable technology and services. Together with offsetting residual emissions, we not only reduce our energy consumption, but also that of our customers, who can guarantee that we as a subcontractor are actively working on sustainability.

– This is not something we say to appear environmentally friendly, but is a concrete measure that can be documented. At the same time, we know this is a marathon, not a sprint, concludes Askeland.
